Norfolk’s Great Big Read Campaign

Norfolk’s Great Big Read is an annual event organised by Norfolk County Council. The event runs for a period of one month and encourages people to not only read more but to talk to others about the books that they’ve read, and leave reviews online. There are a range of group reading sessions available throughout the month along with competitions and a celebration of World Book Night.

This year’s Great Big Read marks the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. For this reason the event is focusing on the Shakespeare Re-written series. This is a collection of novels which have been inspired by Shakespeare’s classic romance, tragedy and comedy stories. They have been written by a range of authors and made more modern in order for newer generations to enjoy them.

Norfolk County Council commissioned us to come up with a campaign design that could be used across a range of promotional materials. We of course wanted to promote the fact that this year’s event focuses on Shakespeare but we also wanted to find a visual way of emphasising the fact that this is not Shakespeare in the traditional sense. We used bright colours and bold, modern typography to accentuate the modern twist and help the event appeal to a younger age group.
